About This Surah

Surah Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable Event) is a Meccan surah of 96 verses. It presents the most detailed and systematic classification of humanity on the Day of Judgment into three distinct groups: the Foremost (As-Sabiqun), the Companions of the Right (Ashab Al-Yamin), and the Companions of the Left (Ashab Al-Shimal), with uniquely vivid descriptions of each group's outcome.

Key Themes

The cataclysmic beginning of the Last Day, the three categories of people on the Day of Judgment and their distinct rewards or punishments, the delights of Paradise in extraordinary detail for the foremost and the righteous, the torments of Hell for those of the left hand, and the three states of the dying person.

Virtues & Significance

The Prophet ﷺ reportedly said: "Whoever recites Al-Waqi'ah every night, poverty will never afflict them." (Ibn Kathir narrates this from Ibn Mas'ud). It is among the most recited surahs for seeking sustenance and protection from poverty. The Prophet ﷺ also mentioned it alongside Hud and Al-Mursalat as having made his hair grey.

Context of Revelation

Revealed in Mecca. Its vivid, multi-sensory descriptions of Paradise — the flowing springs, the non-intoxicating drinks, the beautiful companions, the lofty couches — were revolutionary in a culture that understood paradise only in terms of tribal status and material excess.
