About This Surah
Surah Al-Mulk (The Sovereignty) is a Meccan surah of 30 verses, one of the most beloved and widely recited chapters in the entire Quran. It is described in hadith as "the protector" and "the intercessor" that will argue for its reciter on the Day of Judgment and protect them in the grave.
Key Themes
Allah's absolute sovereignty and the perfection of His creation with no flaws, the creation of death and life as a test, the layers of the heavens and the stars as missiles against devils, the contrast between those who walk faces down and those who walk upright, and the utter dependence of all creation on Allah for provision.
Virtues & Significance
The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is a surah in the Quran of 30 verses that interceded for a man until he was forgiven — it is Surah Al-Mulk." (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi). He also recited it every night before sleeping. It is one of the most memorized surahs globally and is recited nightly by hundreds of millions of Muslims.
Context of Revelation
Revealed in Mecca to establish Allah's sovereignty over all existence, directly countering the Meccan polytheists' fragmented view of divinity. The image of the smooth, flawless heavens was an indirect challenge: if the creation is perfect, how can its Creator have any partners or deficiencies?
About the Reciter
Sheikh Abdullah Khayyat was a revered Saudi Imam and Quran reciter who served as Imam and Khateeb of Masjid al-Haram in Mecca for many years.
