About This Surah

Surah Maryam (Mary) is a Meccan surah of 98 verses, the only surah in the Quran named after a woman. It opens with the miraculous stories of Zakariya and the birth of Yahya (John the Baptist), followed by the detailed account of Maryam and the birth of Isa (Jesus) without a father.

Key Themes

The miraculous birth of John the Baptist to elderly Zakariya, the birth of Jesus to the virgin Mary, the station of various prophets from Ibrahim to Idris, the error of claiming Allah has a son, and the certainty of resurrection and judgment.

Virtues & Significance

When the first Muslims migrated to Abyssinia and recited Surah Maryam to the Christian king Negus (Ashama ibn Abjar), he wept and said the gap between the Quran's description of Jesus and his own scriptures was no wider than this — pointing two fingers closely together — and granted them protection.

Context of Revelation

Revealed in Mecca during the early persecution period. It was among the first surahs recited to the Christian king of Abyssinia during the first Hijra, making it historically pivotal in Muslim-Christian dialogue.
