About This Surah
Surah Ya-Sin is a Meccan surah of 83 verses, often called "the heart of the Quran" by scholars based on a hadith attributed to the Prophet ﷺ. It is the most widely recited surah for the dying, for healing, and for spiritual acceleration and is considered among the most beautiful in terms of sound and imagery.
Key Themes
The prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ and the certainty of the Day of Judgment, the parable of the city whose messengers were rejected, the story of the believer who came running from the far end of the city, the signs of Allah in the night, the sun, the moon, and ships, and the ease of resurrection for Allah.
Virtues & Significance
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Ya-Sin is the heart of the Quran. Whoever reads it seeking the pleasure of Allah and the Next Life, his sins will be forgiven." (Ahmad). It is recited at the bedside of the dying and for spiritual healing. It is arguably the most frequently recited surah outside of prayer in the entire Muslim world.
Context of Revelation
Revealed in Mecca to address the core Qurayshi objections: that Muhammad ﷺ is not a prophet, that resurrection is impossible, and that the Quran is mere poetry or magic. The surah refutes all three in sequence with overwhelming evidence.
