About This Surah

Surah Yusuf (Joseph) is a Meccan surah of 111 verses that tells the complete story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) ﷺ from his childhood dream to his rise as minister of Egypt. Allah calls it "the best of stories" (ahsan al-qasas) in the surah itself.

Key Themes

Jealousy and its consequences (the brothers' plot), patience and integrity under trial (Yusuf in prison), divine planning overcoming human schemes, family reunion and forgiveness, and the ultimate triumph of the righteous.

Virtues & Significance

The Prophet ﷺ recommended reciting this surah during times of grief. The story of Yusuf is unique in the Quran in being told completely in a single surah. Islamic scholars consider it the most complete narrative in the Quran, covering themes of youth, trial, temptation, patience, and forgiveness.

Context of Revelation

Revealed in Mecca during the Year of Sorrow, after the deaths of Khadijah and Abu Talib. It was revealed as a specific comfort to the Prophet ﷺ who was enduring intense personal grief and external persecution.
