About This Surah
Surah Al-Fatihah (The Opening) is the first and most recited chapter of the Holy Quran. Its seven verses form the essential prayer recited in every unit of the Muslim daily prayer, making it the most repeated passage in human history.
Key Themes
Praise and glorification of Allah, acknowledgment of His lordship and mercy, and the sincere supplication for guidance to the straight path while avoiding the paths of those who have earned His anger or gone astray.
Virtues & Significance
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described it as "the greatest surah in the Quran" (Sahih Al-Bukhari). It is also called Umm Al-Kitab (Mother of the Book) and Al-Sab' Al-Mathani (The Seven Oft-Repeated Verses). Scholars note that a prayer without Al-Fatihah is invalid.
Context of Revelation
Revealed in Mecca, Al-Fatihah consists of 7 verses and serves as a comprehensive introduction to the Quran. It encapsulates the entire relationship between the Creator and His creation in a single, sublime supplication.
